Wanting to be prepared for resurrection, early Christians (whose religion was still illegal) opted to be buried rather than cremated, which was more common amongst Pagans of the time. For hygiene reasons, the burial of bodies was not permitted within the city limits… so they went underground.
It started with the wealthy creating burial grounds beneath their property and extending this space to their fellow community, no matter their social class or faith, the catacombs were for everyone. Martyrs and Saints began to be buried underground, and worshipping below the ground soon followed, as a means to be close to the dead while staying in hiding.
